Naimh Currie-Smith, a National Youth Dance Ambassador, reviewed our work at Dance East, writing: "One of my favourite pieces was ’Aleppo’ performed by Dance2 from the Inclusive Youth Dance Company. Ranging from the ages of 13-17 years old, the dancers touched on the unfolding events in Syria and the ancient citadel of Aleppo. I felt that the dancers addressed the events in a mature and sensitive way, incorporating different styles of dance such as native folk and contemporary which created a sense of the bringing together of two cultures. The use of water and water bottles were also incorporated cleverly into the movement. The performers manipulated the bottles coming up with original and inspiring movement content symbolising the scarcity of water. This was just one of many touching and beautiful performances I was given the pleasure of watching." (YDE Review 2014).
Two Thirds Sky supports Dance2 participants to perform or choreograph their own work in studio sharings for friends and family. We also encourage dancers to participate and engage in workshops, seminar discussions and master-classes. Previously this has included a talk with Matthew Bourne, a Richard Alston Master-class in working with music, a Retina Dance workshop, and most recently a summer school, featuring Aaron Vickers (James Cousins Company) and guest teachers from the CAT scheme at The Place.
Becoming a dancer
Dance2 is Bedfordshire’s foremost provision in contemporary technique and experimental dance practice for young people. Many of our dancers build their foundational skills over the year, before entering recognised centres of excellence in dance - including the CAT schemes and the National Youth Dance Company.
Being Part of Dance2
2016-2017 is set to be an exciting year. We will be hosting a theatre showcase in the Spring term, as well as mentoring select young people for the national Young Creatives program. This project is for a budding choreographer - and the successful candidate will have their work developed and performed at The Royal Opera House.
Both the Intermediate and Advanced companies will be entering work into regional and national platforms including U.Dance East and the Red Cross ’Make your Move’ event, where the final is held at the O2 in London.
Lastly, we are planning to make a new Dance Film, by getting dancers to be both in front of and behind the camera. The final piece will be sent to film festivals for exhibition.
The Advanced company (15-18years) is a group for those wanting to extend and develop their technical and performative skills.
The Intermediate company is for young people (11-14yrs) with some previous dance experience. It introduces new and challenging material and allows the group to work together to create exciting performance repertory.
The Advanced Company trains Mondays 6:30-8:30pm
The Intermediate Company trains Thursdays 6:30-8:30pm
There are ten weeks in each term with a week’s break in the middle for Half Term. The next Autumn Term starts on the week beginning the 26th September.
